Ryan Smith: Good or Gone?

There has not been a more perplexing player in this Bucs roster than Ryan Smith. Whether you think of him as a corner or as a safety, he’s been moved around to both positions and special teams, benched, and started due to injury multiple times. He’s looked silly on the field many times, seemingly not knowing what he is doing, but was also the one that broke the turnover-less streak we had going this year. So the question I bring up is; is he good or is he gone?

In my opinion, we can’t possibly know if he is good. Is he serviceable? Yes. Now, I say that because there is absolutely nobody on this planet that can look good in the secondary while we were running Mike Smith’s scheme. We all screamed at our TVs wondering, “Why the heck are our CBs and Safeties playing 15 yards off the ball on 3rd and 2.”

We have seen this defense on a historical pace for the “WORST DEFENSE EVER.”

We all saw the difference when we changed DCs, and had someone in place that took the players’ strengths into consideration when preparing the game plan for each game.

Ryan Smith has one more year on his rookie contract, so I think he’ll be here next year. We will get the chance to see how many players will benefit from this new system. The offseason is shaping up to be possibly one of the biggest and one of the most important in our team’s history.
