Dan Blocker was an American television actor and a Korean War veteran who rose to fame during his lifetime. The character of Hoss Cartwright, played by him on NBC’s western television series Bonanza, was one of the longest-running in American television history.
Adolescent Years
It wasn’t long until Dan and his family relocated to O’Donnell, west of Lubbock where they opened a store. In high school, he went to Texas Military Institute and then to Hardin-Simmons University, where he was a member of the football team. To continue his undergraduate football career, he transferred to Sul Ross State Teachers College in 1947 and was acknowledged as the school’s outstanding player.
From 1951 to 1952 he fought as an infantry sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he got a Purple Heart after he was injured in combat. He also received a number of additional decorations and awards for his service. Then after returning from his time in the military, the young man went on to earn a master’s degree in dramatic arts. Due to his imposing stature, though, he began working as a bouncer and rodeo performer. Before relocating to California to teach, he taught high school theatre and English at Eddy Elementary School in Sonora, Texas, starting in 1953.
Career
In a Three Stooges short called “Outer Space Jitters” in 1957, Blocker made his acting debut as The Goon. Gunsmoke” and “Colt.45” followed, and he had a few appearances in both of these shows as well. As a result, he was cast as a blacksmith and cattle rancher in the NBC series “The Restless Gun.” “Sheriff of Cochise,” “Gunsight Ridge,” and other Westerns continued to place him in supporting roles.
Next, he appeared in an episode of Walt Disney’s “Zorro” and subsequently appeared as Sergeant Broderick in NBC’s “Wagon Train.” Jeff Richards played Jefferson Drum in another NBC western named Jefferson Drum and in the season one episode of “Have Gun Will Travel” during the same year. In the crime thriller “Richard Diamond, Private Detective,” he played a poker-playing rodeo act in the episode “Rodeo.” The following year, he appeared as a guest star on “The Troubleshooters.”

Is Dan Blocker’s death on Bonanza accidental? While Bonanza was still airing, Dan Blocker met his terrible demise. Hoss Cartwright, a character in the film, was purposefully killed off by the filmmakers because of this. On May 13, 1972, in Los Angeles, California, Dan Blocker, then 43, died tragically. An embolism in the lung following a cholecystectomy, the surgical removal of the gallbladder, killed him.
A pulmonary embolus was listed as the cause of death for Dan Blocker.
Life in The Private Sphere
Blocker married Dolphia Parker, whom he met as a student at Sul Ross State University, according to little is known about his private life. When their kids were grown, they all sought jobs in the entertainment industry, including the twins. When Pat Brown and Eugene McCarthy ran for office, he was a staunch supporter.
A 6,000-square-foot mansion in Hancock Park and an Inglewood home were among the properties he owned. He was also a car enthusiast and owned a 1965 Chevrolet Chevelle and a 1965 Huffaker Genie MK10 race vehicle.

One of his properties was a 6,000-square-foot estate in Hancock Park, Los Angeles, while another was a property in Inglewood. Automobile fanatic, he had a 1965 Chevy Chevelle and a 1965 Huffsker Genie MK10 race car, among others.
