In the city of Newark, New Jersey, Raymond Allen Liotta was born on December 18, 1954. After being abandoned at an orphanage, he was adopted at the age of six months by Mary, the township clerk, and Alfred Liotta, the owner of an auto-parts shop.

His adoptive parents campaigned for municipal office unsuccessfully as well, and he recalls his father’s campaign distributing leaflets at parades. Linda, Liotta’s adopted sister, is an adopted child as well. He hired a private detective to find his biological mother in the early 2000s.

He has a biological half-sister and a biological half-brother. Union High School is where he graduated in 1973. He studied acting at the University of Miami and graduated with a BFA in 1978.

Actress and producer Michelle Grace married Liotta in February 1997. They had a daughter together before their 2004 divorce. In February 2007, he was arrested for driving under the influence after crashing his Cadillac Escalade into two parked cars in Pacific Palisades. He was adamant about not pleading guilty.
