A Brief Biography of Oskar Sala
It’s hard to believe that Oskar Sala was alive from 1910 till 2002. It was while performing in traditional piano shows as a young man that he honed his skills on the keyboard and the organ. The Berlin Conservatory’s Paul Hindemith, a violist, and arranger taught him piano and composition in 1929.
The Trautonium, a groundbreaking electronic instrument invented by Dr. Friedrich Trautwein, was also a source of inspiration for him as he learned to play it in the school’s lab.
It was on June 20, 1930, that Sala and Hindemith presented the Trautonium at the Berliner Musikhochschule Hall dubbed “Neue Musik Berlin 1930” to the public. With Hindemith’s Concert for Trautonium and String Quartet in 1931, Sala toured Germany with the instrument. The “Show for Trautonium AND Orchestra” by Hindemith understudy Harald Genzmer also featured him solo.
When Oskar Sala was a student at the University of Berlin, he studied physics. This Trautonium, popularised by Telefunken, was developed with his assistance. Oskar Sala’s mother was a singer and his father was a doctor of optometry.
