Ernest Franco, the official doctor for the Tijuana Wrestling Commission, confirmed on Tuesday that the famed Mexican pro wrestler Perro Aguayo Jr., who passed away last Friday during a match, died of a heart attack brought on by a cervical stroke caused by a fractured neck.
The president of the Tijuana Wrestling Commission, Juan Carlos Pelayo, has stated that Aguayo’s death was not the result of negligence. Crash, the wrestling organization that Aguayo was competing for, had a doctor and a medical team consisting of two ambulances and five paramedics on hand.
Many people were unhappy with how long it took for medical assistance to reach Aguayo, who lay unconscious in the ring while the fight continued. A former wrestler named Konnan who was ringside attempted to awaken Aguayo by shaking him a couple of times before medical help arrived. The time it took for a doctor to arrive was 80 seconds, as reported by the TWC. Many eyewitnesses have posted videos of the incident on YouTube.
Pro wrestling columnist and publisher of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Dave Meltzer described the late Aguayo as “a tremendous celebrity in Mexico, the top rudo, or villain in the country” before his death and burial on Monday in Guadalajara. I’d say pretty much the level of an HHH from several years back or Seth Rollins, if Rollins maintains in his position for 10-15 more years,” Meltzer stated when asked to compare him to a current WWE wrestler. Meltzer said, “I don’t see much changing in the U.S. with regard to how in-ring injuries are addressed because of the uproar about how the case was handled when Aguayo was wounded. It was fortunate that medical help was close at hand, with both a doctor and an ambulance on hand. That’s a stroke of luck, to be sure.
