Walmart co-founder Sam Walton (1918–1992) and his wife Helen (1919–2007) had four children, the eldest of whom was Rob Walton, born on October 28, 1944, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

On his way to earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas, Walton attended The College of Wooster.

As vice chairman of Walmart in 1982, he left Tulsa in 1978 to join as a senior vice president. A few days after his father’s death, on April 7, 1992, he was named chairman of the board.
Career
Conner & Winters, the law firm that defended Walmart, offered Rob Walton a position once he graduated from law school. Rob was a senior vice president at Walmart when he departed Conner & Winters after working there for several years.
He was made a member of the board of directors in 1982. Rob succeeded his father as chairman two days following his death in 1992. As long as he held this job, Walton didn’t step down until 2015.
