Consumer Cellular Review: 5 Things To Know Before You Sign Up

consumer cellular

If you want to save money on your phone service, Consumer Cellular offers access to the AT&T and T-Mobile networks for as little as $20 a month.

I personally tested Consumer Cellular for 30 days to see how the service performed. In order to assess Consumer Cellular’s performance, I also contrasted it against more than 70 different phone plans. In this article, I’ll go over Consumer Cellular’s plans and prices, as well as how to sign up and what to expect from their service.

Information to Consider Before Joining Consumer Cellular

Consumer Cellular, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), works with AT&T and T-Mobile to provide coverage. When you sign up for service and provide your ZIP code, Consumer Cellular will determine which network will work best for you, and you will have access to that network’s towers. Prebuilt plans beginning at $20 per month include 1GB of data and unlimited calls and messages.

Along with providing affordable plans, Consumer Cellular is widely recognized for touting its pleasant customer service. It actually got Clark.com’s award for the best senior cell phone plan for this same reason.

I spent 30 days evaluating the coverage, call and text quality, customer service, and other features of Consumer Cellular’s 1GB package.

You may learn more about Consumer Cellular in the sections that follow, including information on the plans that are available, the dependability of the service, and my thoughts on whether you should consider it when selecting your next phone plan.

Budget and Plans

Consumer Cellular offers six different prebuilt plans with monthly costs ranging from $20 to $55 with the $5 autopay discount. With each bundle, unlimited calls and messages are included.

The following plans are available from Consumer Cellular, with one line, two lines, and three lines total monthly costs: As you can see, Consumer Cellular will offer discounts for customers that have more lines. In reality, the unlimited data plan for three lines costs $90 per month, saving you $25 for each additional line over the course of a single line’s monthly cost.

Once you’ve reached your monthly quota, only the $55 unlimited plan allows you unrestricted access to 2G data speeds. If you consume more data than is permitted by any other plan, you will be immediately upgraded to the next one.

If you want another option and don’t need data with your phone subscription, Consumer Cellular offers it. On the plans page, selecting “I Don’t Need a Data Plan” will show a $15 per month talk-only phone plan with unlimited minutes.

A $5 autopay discount and a 5% monthly service discount are also available to AARP members. You can submit your membership details to obtain additional savings after selecting your plan.

Activation Process

Selecting a phone plan and launching your service with Consumer Cellular are both extremely straightforward procedures. I recently signed up with Consumer Cellular myself to carefully examine the process.

I started by visiting Consumer Cellular’s website, choosing the $20 plan, and adding it to my basket. In the “Products & Services” section, I chose “Bring Your Own Phone” instead of choosing to buy a new phone. The IMEI number of my phone might be entered there. And make sure it works with my phone.

You may obtain the IMEI number of your phone by dialing *#06#. Additionally, make sure your phone is unlocked before buying a SIM card from Consumer Cellular.

During the month I was testing Consumer Cellular’s service, I didn’t leave the city very often. However, I normally had reliable service with no missed calls or texts that were not delivered. However, there are regional variations in service.

Two of the networks that Consumer Cellular collaborates with to provide coverage are AT&T and T-Mobile. To find out if Consumer Cellular offers service where you are, look at its coverage map.

Rates of Data

Consumer Cellular offers access to AT&T and T-4G Mobile’s LTE/5G networks. It is safe to anticipate that Consumer Cellular will most likely provide you with dependable access to data based on my own experience and a comparison of the AT&T and T-Mobile coverage maps.

Make sure to enter your address on Consumer Cellular’s online coverage map before switching to make sure you’ll be covered. You may also look at their coverage maps to get a better sense of the service in your area given that these are the towers on which T-Mobile and AT&T operate.
