My Death Date: When Will You Die? ‘death Clock’ Says It Knows
Inquiring minds want to know, right? So, what if there was a way for you to extend your stay here? I’m not sure how I feel about the first question, but I know the answer to the second: Yes, most definitely! Web-based tools for estimating one’s life expectancy are examined by Steven Petrow.
It’s been a long time coming, but now it’s finally here. The Death Clock describes itself as “the Internet’s friendly reminder that life is slipping away… second by second. You will be reminded of how short your life is by the Death Clock’s hourglass-like design.”
“Eek,” I thought, but at the same time I began to answer a few basic questions: date of birth, sex, BMI (body mass index), if you smoke or not, and your general state of mind (from “normal” to “sadistic”). If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to get a sense of what’s going on in your body, this isn’t it.
The Death Clock ran its algorithm after I answered all the questions truthfully (58, non-smoker, good BMI, and a “normal” view on life). After only a few moments of my life, the clock showed me my “own day of death.” Is April 23, 2031, just 15 years away? Apparently so When I become 73, I’m going to be so old!
There are 481,730,933 seconds between now and the time I took the quiz if memory serves. The minutes and seconds are counting down. The hands of time are moving. In particular, the warning about “the grave danger of being fat,” which read: “Excess weight has a dramatic impact on one’s health,” did get my attention, O Death Clock. In light of my criticism of the Fitbit in my previous column, perhaps I should reevaluate my use of the device.
It was also interesting to see how long I’d have to live if I were female: Five years. Six out of ten. Overweight, minus four. That’s what the Death Clock said after I ticked off “sadistic” under personality type: “I am sorry but your time has ended.” Thank you for your consideration.

I was in need of some comfort that the clock didn’t know my future as well as I thought it did. Dean Foster, an emeritus professor at the University of Pennsylvania, told me that “some calculators give exact dates: these shouldn’t be taken very seriously.”
“Furthermore, the majority of your life will be spent in the future, where health care will continue to improve. You will likely outlive many simplistic life-table calculations because so many of them neglect this important factor.” When I asked Foster what one could do to increase one’s life expectancy, he replied, “Don’t smoke. That’s the biggest one by a mile.” Because of this, I no longer feel so miserable.

Thanks to the work of scientists like Foster, who developed the “How long will I live?” tool, you may get a more accurate estimate of your life expectancy by filling out a questionnaire. The calculator ran its program and spit out a much more optimistic result: I’d live to be 90 if I answered all the basic questions and about a dozen additional ones (about education, income, marital status, physical fitness, and diet).
The finest (and worst) states in which to retire A Life Expectancy Calculator from Northwestern Mutual was another option I explored. It took me another 13 questions to get the best result yet—or at least the one that suggests the greatest longevity: 97 years.
What surprised me most about the question, however, is that Northwestern is an insurance company that helps “people manage risks and achieve financial security.”
A good one. It’s doubtful, but I’m not sure I want to live that long, to begin with anyway. The most important use for these calculators, however, is retirement planning, as Foster points out. If you want to avoid running out of money early, you need to plan for the larger end of the scale.

This is what you’ll take away from this article: With three different tests, three distinct outcomes were obtained: I could live to be 73, 90, or even 97 years old. Commonalities emerged in several areas. Smoking has a negative impact on your life expectancy, so avoid it.
Exercise and a nutritious diet are extremely important. Your state of mind has a lot to do with it. Race, income, and education all play a role in health and longevity. How much worse would it be if I died before I had a chance to save up enough money for retirement? That has made me fear for my mental health… and even my life.
