Career And Achievements

Okulaja was a North Carolina Tar Heels basketball player from 1995 to 1999. With Antawn Jamison, Vince Carter, Ed Cota, Shammond Williams, and Makhtar N’Diaye, he was part of Guthridge’s successful “six starters” rotation in the 1997–98 NCAA season.

A member of the 1998–99 All-Atlantic Coast Conference First Team, he was awarded the Tar Heels’ MVP during his final year. Okulaja was the first UNC basketball player to lead the team in scoring, rebounding, three-pointers made, and steals.

He has played professionally for a variety of Euroleague teams, including ALBA Berlin in the 1994–95 season, winning the FIBA Kora Cup, and again in 1999–00, and later RheinEnergie Köln (2006–07) in Germany; CB Girona (2000–01 and 2003–04), Barcelona (2001–02), Unicaja Malaga (2002–03), and Pamesa Valencia (2004–05) in Spain; and Benetton Treviso in Italy.

Okulaja (2004). ALBA Berlin won the German national (Bundesliga) championship in 1999–00 under his leadership. In his rookie season with Girona, he was named to the All-League First Team after winning the “Rookie of the Year” award. The Spanish All-Star Game honored him with the “Most Spectacular Player” award in 2002.

After training camps with the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, and eventually the Utah Jazz, Okulaja failed to make an NBA roster in all three efforts.

Okulaja underwent a year of therapy after being diagnosed with a spine tumor in 2008. He continued to play for the Brose Baskets for one more season when it was proven to be a success.

It was in July of that year that he declared his retirement from the sport.
